What to do if you Accidentally eat Pork as a Muslim

In Islam, there is No Sin on any Muslim if they eat Pork accidentally. Every Muslim is aware that eating of Pork is Haram (prohibited) and a Major Sin in Islam but, any Muslim who eats Pork accidentally or unknowingly, then it is not a Sin in the sight of Allah SWT.

Evidence from Quran

A Muslim is not accountable of any Sin, unless that Sin was done intentionally. Allah SWT already knows what is in your heart and what are your intentions. Allah SWT says in the glorious Quran, in Surah Al Ahzab 33:5

Call them 1 by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers – then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. — Quran Translation by Saheeh International

Call them by (the name of) their (real) fathers; It is more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in faith and your friends. There is no sin on you in the mistake you make, but in that which you do with intention of your heart; and Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful. — Quran Translation by Mufti Taqi Usmani

Evidence from Hadith

The Pork was eaten by you accidentally or it was fed to you forcefully, in both the cases you are not accountable for any Sin. As we provided evidence from Quran, now we will also provide evidence from the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

It was narrated from Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah has forgiven for me my nation their mistakes and forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do.” — Grade Sahih (Darussalam), Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah 2043.

How to Cleanse after eating Pork

There is no evidence from the Quran or from the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), for cleaning 7 times after eating pork or touching of pig. Cleaning of utensils 7 times, this Hadith was specific for Dog’s not for Pig’s. There is no need to take a burden on yourself by thinking to wash or cleanse multiple times, as there is no such ruling on it. Even now, if you are in doubt, in terms of cleansing or not after eating pork, then a Wudu (ablution) is enough for the satisfaction of your mind not mandatory.

Why Muslims don’t eat Pork

This is a common question asked by non-Muslims all around the world and the answer for this question is very simple. We Muslims don’t eat Pork because it prohibited by Allah SWT (GOD) in the Quran. There are total of 4 Ayah’s (Verses) from Quran, where Allah SWT has forbidden eating of Pork.

Verse No. 1: He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Surah Al Baqarah, Chapter 2, Verse 173] – Saheeh International.

Verse No. 2: “Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows.

That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [Surah Al Ma’idah, Chapter 5,Verse 3] – Saheeh International.

Verse No. 3: Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” [Surah Al An’aam, Chapter 6, Verse 145] – Saheeh International

Verse No. 4: He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Surah Al Nahl, Chapter 16, Verse 115] – Saheeh International.
